Since their formation in 2014, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets have been on a remarkable journey, and they never fail to make our heads bang as much as they amaze us. Indeed, the albums High Visceral, Pt. 1 and Pt. 2, released in 2016 and 2017 respectively, have introduced the world to their intriguing (and at first glance indescribable) identity, mixing psych-rock, powerful garage riffs and prog structures. Two years after these two volumes, And Now for the Whatchamacallit was released, even more catchy than its two little brothers. With this sequel, one wondered how the Australian band would be able to keep this true flawless journey going.

Following a handful of tracks released between 2019 and 2021, including the very good Mr. Prism and Tally-Ho, the five-piece announces the release of its 4th album Shyga! The Sunlight Mound for this Friday, February 5th.

The first noticeable thing when listening to this album is that the band’s usual recipe has come back to us once again, and to be honest, we’re happy to take it up again. But this time, new elements reminding the digital world have been added to this recipe, notably multiple effects reminding us of glitches or 8bits sounds, as well as the album cover and some song names. As for the previous albums, this one includes short interludes of psychedelic atmospheres such as Big Dijon in intro, More Glitter and Round The Corner

To be honest, we don’t necessarily think this album is THE project of the band’s career. Indeed, it would be possible to find the titles less catchy on the whole than for the previous opus. That being said, consistency and homogeneity have the merit of being present throughout the album. The latter also remains faithful to their identity, it is also appreciable to feel the will to integrate new sound elements to it. The energy and above all the fun are preserved and for us, that’s the main thing!

Jack McEwan and his colleagues have once again not failed to make us move and once again this is what we remember from this album. Shyga! The Sunlight Mound is totally in line with the previous albums, good job guys!
